The Facts: Animal Research

Approximately 95 percent of the biomedical research animals in the United States are rodents - creating the right lighting environment for rodent holding rooms is essential.

The lighting in an animal research facility can substantially impact the physiology and behavior of the animals and affect the outcome of the research

Appropriate laboratory animal lighting and lighting protocols are essential for maintaining the health and wellbeing of laboratory animals and ensuring the credible outcome of scientific investigations.

The Solution: Narrow-Spectrum, Non-filtered Red LED Lighting

Lighting is a critical element to consider when designing an animal research facility so that scientists can safely access and observe nocturnal animals at night, without risking light-at-night (LAN) contamination.

It is recommended that specifiers select narrow-spectrum, non-filtered red light at either 660nm (deep red) or 735nm (far red) for these spaces.

In addition, specify luminaires that are dual function, rated for wet locations, in a stainless-steel enclosure that is sealed and gasketed, and that has earned the appropriate cleanroom or biosafety level rating.
